Special Needs
In Scouting, as with any young people's organisation 'Special Needs' is a complex subject.
'Special Needs' requires an understanding of the needs of youngsters who require additional support to help them undertake normal Scouting activities. Many Leaders and supporters find themselves having to make decisions as to whether they are able to take on a member, who requires special support, to help them undertake what we would consider normal Scouting activities.
In the first instance when a Leader is approached with a view to accepting a prospective youngster, who may have a special need requirement, the Leader probably does not know what the implications may be. There may be problems and difficulties integrating the new member with the other Scouts or the Leader may consider that they do not have enough adult help.
Whatever the perceived difficulty, quite often, the real issue is a lack of understanding. In many instances most Leaders find themselves able to cope when they have a full understanding of the situation.
Scouting has a mechanism where support can be found, Headquarters has produced resources and fact sheets to provide information.
